I'm really relieved to find out that my new guitar matches the third option perfectly. Thank you so much for pointing out the third option. I knew it wasn't a counterfeit (I couldn't picture anyone counterfeiting this guitar, because it's really not a very expensive one), so the only thing I could think was that it was probably stolen. After a closer look with a flashlight, I located the "USED" stamp, it was stamped directly over the serial number. Only the last three numbers were removed, and it looks exactly like the picture you showed. It all sounded pretty grim, and I was getting ready to call the police (sadly, because, if it had been stolen, I was sure the seller wasn't aware of it and I was feeling bad that I was about to cause him problems), and then I saw your post, and my serial number removal matched exactly as you described it. So I googled "guitar serial number removed" and found this forum.

He didn't come across as a thief at all by having me in his place of business and giving me his desk phone and in the building where he was employed, etc., he was laying himself wide open to be found, and just didn't strike me as shady at all.

He met me in his place of employment, and we knew a lot of the same people. I was confused, because I talked to the seller at length while I was trying it out. I would hope that somewhere, someone would do the same for me if mine were ever stolen. As much as I like this guitar, as a fellow musician I was imagining it's owner out there who was without it and more than anything, I wanted to make sure that it was returned to him, the sooner the better. If I knew for sure that it had been stolen, I would have willingly gone to the police and surrendered it. My first thought was "stolen guitar" and I thought I was out both my money and the guitar.

It wasn't until after I got home that I looked at the serial number and saw that the last three numbers were burned off, presumably with a soldering iron or something similar. not super cheap, but not overpriced either. I just bought a Fender FR-48 Steel Body Resonator Guitar off Craigslist at a decent price. I know this is an old thread and an old reply, but GAD, I wanted to thank you for your response here!
